Ojos De Brujo @Highline Ballroom

June 29th, 2007

To my shame, I didn’t even know this band until last night, but
their show became one of the best concerts I’ve been to!

Rooted in latin music, flamenco, mixing hiphop, Djing/rap/beatboxing, electronica, dance!, and rather good usage of video (some of dance video& illustration artworks used were interesting and mixed well with the live performance), everything happened on the stage by the troupe of a little more than 10 people was really ingenious, powerful and emotional but not over-the-top, free and experimental yet still looked & sounded natural and well-fit-together as a total package to engage the audience to the maximum!

The venue, newly open Highline Ballroom on 16th street/chelsea was also a great place to hang out!

Video from one of their shows in Holland.
Hmm. it doesn’t do the justice.
It looks so much toned down in the video.

hot and cool media

June 27th, 2007

excerpt from McLuhan - wikipedia

“Hot” and “cool” media

McLuhan also claimed in the first part of Understanding Media, that different media invite different degrees of participation on the part of a person who chooses to consume a medium. Some media, like the movies, enhance one single sense, in this case vision, in such a manner that a person does not need to exert much effort in filling in the details of a movie image. McLuhan contrasted this with TV, which he claimed requires more effort on the part of viewer to determine meaning, and comics, which due to their minimal presentation of visual detail require a high degree of effort to fill in details that the cartoonist may have intended to portray. A movie is thus said by McLuhan to be “hot”, intensifying one single sense “high definition”, demanding a viewer’s attention, and a comic book to be “cool” and “low definition”, requiring much more conscious participation by the reader to extract value.[36]

Hot media are usually, but not always, visual media; for example, print occupies visual space and is “hot”. Hot media favour analytical precision, quantitative analysis and sequential ordering, as they are usually sequential, linear and logical. They emphasize one sense (for example, of sight or sound) over the others. For this reason, hot media also include radio, as well as film, the lecture and photograph.

Cool media, on the other hand, are usually, but not always, associated with the sense of hearing. They require more active participation on the part of the user, including the perception of abstract patterning and simultaneous comprehension of all parts. Cool media, according to McLuhan, therefore include television, as well as the seminar and cartoons.

This concept appears to force media into binary categories. However, McLuhan’s “hot” and “cool” exist on a continuum: they are more correctly measures on a scale than dichotomous terms. [6]

The Bitch of Living / Spring Awakening

June 3rd, 2007

Musical: Spring Awakening
Song: The Bitch of Living

[Moritz]
God, I dreamed there was an angel
Who could hear me through the wall
As I cried out-like, in Latin
“This is so not life at all
Help me out-out-of this nightmare”
Then I heard her silver call-
She said: “Just give it time, kid
I come to one and all”

She said: “Give me that hand, please
And the itch you can’t control
Let me teach you how to handle
All the sadness in your soul
Oh, we’ll work that silver magic
Then we’ll aim it at the wall”
She said: “Love may make you blind kid-
But I wouldn’t mind at all”

[All]
It’s the bitch of living
(Bitch, just a bitch)
With nothing but your hand
(Just a bitch, yeah)
Just the bitch of living
As someone you can’t stand

[Georg]
See, each night, it’s like fantastic-
Tossing, turning, without rest
‘Cause my days at the piano
With my teacher and her breasts;
And the music’s like the one thing
I can even get at all
And those breasts!
I mean, God, please
Just let those apples fall

[All]
It’s the bitch of living
(ah, ah, ah)
With nothing going on
(Nothing going on)
Just the bitch of living
Asking: what went wrong?

Do they think we want this?
Oh- who knows?

[Ernst]
See, there’s showering in gym class…

[Hanschen]
Bobby Maler, he’s the best
Looks so nasty in those khakis

[Ernst]
God, my whole life’s like some test

[Otto]
Then there’s Marianna Wheelan
As if she’d return my call

[Hanschen]
It’s like just kiss some ass, man
Then you can screw ‘em all

[All]
Alllllllll

[Melchior]
It’s the bitch of living

[All]
It’s the bitch of living

[Melchior]
And living in your head

[All]
In your head
It’s the bitch

[Melchior]
Of living
And sensing God is dead

[All]
It’s the bitch of living

[Melchior]
You watch me-
Just watch me-

[All]
And trying to get ahead

[Melchior]
I’m calling you one day

[All]
It’s the bitch of living
Just getting out of bed

[Melchior]
All will know

[All]
It’s the bitch of living
Living, Living

[Melchior]
All will know

[All]
And getting what you get
It’s the bitch of living

[Melchior]
And knowing this is it

[All]
God, is this it?
This can’t be it
Oh God, what a bitch!

Going To A Town, lyrics by Rufus Wainwright.

June 3rd, 2007

I’m going to a town that has already been burned down
I’m going to a place that is already been disgraced
I’m gonna see some folks who have already been let down.
I’m so tired of America

I’m gonna make it up for all of the Sunday Times
I’m gonna make it up for all of the nursery rhymes
They never really seem to want to tell the truth
I’m so tired of you America

Making my own way home
Ain’t gonna be alone
I got a life to lead America
I got a life to lead

Tell me do you really think you go to hell for having loved?
Tell me and not for thinking every thing that you’ve done is good
(I really need to know)
After soaking the body of Jesus Christ in blood

I’m so tired of America
(I really need to know)

I may just never see you again or might as well
You took advantage of a world that loved you well
I’m going to a town that has already been burned down
I’m so tired of you America

Making my own way home
Ain’t gonna be alone
I got a life to lead America
I got a life to lead
I got a soul to feed
I got a dream to heed
And that’s all I need

Making my own way home
Ain’t gonna be alone
I’m going to a town that has already been burned down
