그래서 나는 어제 [A moon for the misbegotten]을 보러 갔어.
내가 세상에서 제일 좋아하는 배우 중의 하나가 Kevin Spacey인데
그가 나오는 연극을 보러 갈 수 있다니 그건 정말
약간은 surreal.. 한 느낌이었어.
그가 스테이지에서 보여줄 연기가 어떤 것일까에 대해서 궁금 궁금.. 흥분의 마음이 가득해서 갔지.
So, I went to see [A moon for the misbegotten].
Being able to see Kevin Spacey, who really is one of my favorite actors in the UNIVERSE, performing on stage was really surreal so waiting for it made me excited and curious all along.
Kevin Spacey의 연기에는 분명 마력적인 부분이 있다.
뭔가 악마 같은,
비밀스럽고 응큼한 구석이 있는,
그 시니컬한 그러나 어딘가 따뜻한 표정.
다양한 목소리, 훌륭한 딕션.
작은 것으로 많을 것을 말해주는,
보면서도 계속 궁금해지는 그의 연기.
를 듣고 보면,
외형적 모습과는 별개로 그를 좋아하지 않을 수가 없더라고. 그래서 그는 나의 베스트 액터 리스트에 항상 있지.
He’s always in my list of best actors, not because he’s exteriorly beautiful (far from it actually), but because there’s always something magical about his performance.
Something wicked, secretive, crafty hiding,
cynical face that turns into warmth next minute,
multi-emotions at a single moment,
diverse voices, fabulous diction,
telling much with doing little, subtle but definitive,
he is really mesmerizing to watch.
그런 그를 바로 1미터 앞에서 봤지만 (내 표는 맨 앞 줄 맨 중앙 자리. 학생할인표 사랑해.)
그런 마력은 느껴지지 않았어. 아쉽게도.. 아흥..
And I saw him literally one meter(3.3 feet) before me, my seat being the midst of the first row(GOD I love the student rush tix), but unfortunately I didn’t really have his magical power transferred to me.

연극은 총 5인이 등장.
메인 인물들은 3인.
모두 연기를 잘 했다고 생각하지만,
With five cast total, three main cast performing,
I agree that they are all good performers, but..
이야기 자체가 지금 시점에서 너무나 old fashioned 해서 일까?
이야기 전개 자체도 굉장히 클래시컬 하다는 느낌.
어떤 형태로든 감동은 전해지지 않는 것이었어. 아쉽게도…
Perhaps, the story itself is too old fashioned and too classical for me, including how the story structures and solves itself. I couldnt’t feel quite moved at any rate.
내가 너무 복잡한 요즘 이야기에 익숙해져 있는 것일까?
Am I too keen to the complicated way of contemporary storytelling?

Stories told, borrowing the power of alcohol,

Feelings coming outside of schemes,

쓰여졌을 당시에는 어떤 느낌이었을까 궁금해.
1946년 초연이라던데.
그때는, 이런 식의 이야기 자체가 새로웠겠지?
I wonder what it would have brought about when it was first written and played.
그렇게 뭔가를 느끼는 감성이 변해 간다는 게 참
인간 진화의 한 부분인 것 같아서 신기하다.
How people find and develop new areas for emotions, and juxtapose things to trigger sensitivity is surely a part of human evolution. But I also feel sad when we get used to something and we move onto something else, we lose a mind to use or feel for it any more.

Kevin Spacey가 artistic director를 맡고 있는 London의 Old vic theatre의 프로덕션으로,
Eugene O’Neill의 원작 A moon for the misbegotten.
그 유명한 유진 오닐의 연극은 사실 처음 본 것 같은데,
[밤으로의 긴 여로: Long Day’s Journey into Night]라는, 내가 약간 향수를 느끼는 연극의 sequal 격이고,
Jim은 유진 오닐의 형을 모델로 만든 역이라고 하더군.
It was first time for me to see Eugene O’Neill’s in fact.
I learned that [A moon for the misbegotten] was a sequal to the [Long Day’s Journey into Night] which I have some fantasies and have nostalgic feelings about, and the Jim character was based on O’Neill’s own brother and reflected on both plays.

Although he looked too middle-aged on the stage,
and maybe that was one of the hinderances for me not to be fascinated by the show,
I still love him hahaha!

컴퓨터와 휴대전화 등 디지털 기기에 너무 의존한 나머지 기억력이 떨어지고 무기력해지는 이른바 ‘디지털 치매’ 현상이 늘면서 고민하는 사람들이 늘고 있다. 실제 디지털 문명에 중독돼 인터넷이나 휴대전화 등의 도움 없이는 아무 일도 할 수 없는 무기력증에 빠진 사람들이 많다. 그러나 이는 병이 아니기 때문에 두려워할 필요는 없다. 캐나다의 유명한 문화비평가 마셜 맥루한(1911~1980)은 그의 저서 ‘미디어의 이해: 인간의 확장’에서 “기술이 발달함에 따라 인간의 능력은 얼마든지 확장될 수 있다”고 말했다. ‘자동차는 다리의 확장, 컴퓨터는 두뇌의 확장’이라고 생각하고 창조적 업무에 매진하라는 것이다.
◆ 디지털 치매는 병이 아니다 = 대기업 과장인 김모(39)씨는 최근 대학병원의 신경정신과를 찾았다. 최근 아내의 전화번호가 가물가물할 때도 있고, 심지어 친구와의 10분 전 대화내용도 기억하지 못하는 경우가 허다해졌기 때문이다. 불과 10년전 대학 졸업할 때까지만 해도 친구의 전화번호는 물론 주소와 생일까지 기억하고 대중가요 20여곡의 가사 정도는 거뜬히 외우는 등 발군의 기억력을 자랑하던 그였다. 김씨는 “혹시 머리에 문제가 생긴 것은 아닌지 걱정했지만 아무런 문제가 없다는 진단을 받아 다행이다”고 말했다. 김표한 신경정신과 전문의는 “최근 김씨와 비슷한 증상을 호소하며 찾아오는 직장인이나 자영업자들이 하루에 1~2명 있다”며 “컴퓨터를 많이 사용하고 너무 많은 양의 정보를 접하다 보니 오히려 집중력이 떨어지는 일시적인 증상일 뿐”이라고 말했다.
김승현 고려대 의대 정신과 교수는 “서양 사람들이 슈퍼마켓에서 잔돈을 계산할 때 계산기가 없으면 제대로 하지 못하는 경우가 많은 것처럼 우리나라에서도 이 같은 변화가 자연스럽게 나타나고 있는 것일 뿐”이라며 “병리적 현상인 ‘치매’와는 다르다”고 설명했다. 김원 서울백병원 정신과 교수도 “기억력을 사용할 필요가 없어 생기는 디지털 치매는 치료가 반드시 필요한 ‘병’과는 다르다”며 “일반적으로 알려져 있는 치매가 뇌의 하드웨어 자체가 망가지는 병이라면 디지털 치매는 집중력과 관심의 문제일 뿐”이라고 말했다.
◆ 인간 능력의 확장 = 전문가들은 디지털 치매로 인한 기억력 감퇴 등은 문제될 게 없으며 창조적 업무로 눈을 돌리라고 조언했다. 김성태 고려대 언론학부 교수는 “과거 인간이 걸어다니거나 말을 타고 다닐 때는 다리가 발달했고, 인쇄술이 발달했을 때에는 논리성을 반영하는 좌뇌의 활동이 활발했으며, 최근에는 인터넷이 발달하면서 감성과 감각, 시각적인 요소의 활용이 높아졌다”며 “이처럼 장단점이 상존하고 새로운 기술을 사용할 수밖에 없는 만큼 부정적인 부분은 재차 지적해 극복하고 우리 삶의 양식을 바꿔나가면 된다”고 말했다.
김용학 연세대 사회학과 교수는 “디지털 치매와 같은 디지털 시대의 부작용을 그저 부작용으로만 볼 게 아니라 우리 생각이나 삶의 방향을 바꾸는 계기로 만들 필요가 있다”며 “이른바 지식정보와 같이 단순 암기를 강조하는 교육에서 벗어나 보다 창의적이고 자유로운 지적 활동으로 인간의 교육이나 지식연구, 활동의 패러다임을 바꿀 필요가 있다”고 말했다. 이준기 연세대 정보대학원 교수도 “우리가 직접 해야만 했던 단순한 작업은 이제 기계가 대신해주고 있으니 창조적인 일에 매진하는 것이 올바른 선택”이라고 말했다.

And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact… that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent wasn’t it… who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here.

Miranda : And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs… and it’s sort of comical how you think you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact you’re wearing a sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room… from a pile of stuff.

The screenwriter really wrote a good statement here. And when it is carried by the charismatic Meryl Streep, it sounds just so captivating. I’m not that into fashion but I would feel for this line.
This movie is really 10 times better than the original book!
작가가 정말 글을 잘 쓴거 같다. 게다가 완전 멋진 메릴 스트립의 연기때문에 더욱 빛이 나는 듯.
패션에 그렇게 관심이 많은 편은 아니지만 이 대사에는 정말 깊게 감명!
이 영화는 정말이지 원작소설보다 10배는 잘만들었다. 감동도 있고.
I got to know this show from itp-alum list which I had neglected to visit these days.
요즘에 잘 가지 않았던 itp 졸업생 리스트에서 이 쇼를 발견했다.
One of itp-alums seems to be involved in this production called “Losing Something”.
“losing something”이라는 이 쇼에 졸업생 중 하나가 참여하고 있는 듯.
They are using eyeliner (holography video projection) along with isadora.
홀로그래피 비디오 프로젝션을 하는 아이라이너와 이사도라라는 프로그램을 사용하고 있다.
Isadora, I remember seeing the demonstration of it while I was at itp.
이사도라 데모를 학교 다닐 때 본 기억이 있는데,
But I didn’t know people in the field are actually continuosly using it.
인간들이 계속 그걸 이용하고 있는 줄은 전혀 몰랐다!
I think 4D art(Canadian theater troupe) also used eyeliner for their production of the tempest at the bam last year.
캐나다 극단인 4D art가 작년 bam에서 템페스트 공연할 때도 아이라이너를 이용했던 거 같다.
It was.. quite successful I think. The usage of the 3D holography made sense since it was featuring the dead people. What made me confused was perhaps the french language, not the visuals..
쇼는 성공적이었다. 죽은 자들의 이미지를 홀로그라피로 대신하는 것이 컨셉적으로도 말이 되었던 것 같다. 나를 더욱 헷갈리게 했던 건, 아마도 영상보다 불어대사가 아니었을까나?
