Thomas Hobbes

According to Hobbes, society is a population beneath a sovereign authority, to whom all individuals in that society cede their natural rights for the sake of protection. Any abuses of power by this authority are to be accepted as the price of peace. In particular, the doctrine of separation of powers is rejected. the sovereign must control civil, military, judicial and ecclesiastical powers.

John Locke

Unlike Thomas Hobbes, Locke believed that human nature is characterized by reason and tolerance. Like Hobbes, Locke believed that human nature allowed men to be selfish. This is apparent with the introduction of currency. In a natural state all people were equal and independent, and none had a right to harm another’s “life, health, liberty, or possessions.” Locke never refers to Hobbes by name, however, and may instead have been responding to other writers of the day.[4] Locke also advocated governmental checks and balances and believed that revolution is not only a right but an obligation in some circumstances. These ideas would come to have profound influence on the Constitution of the United States and its Declaration of Independence.

Piano is an(other) interactive visual instrument that uses human sound and image as the element of the musical&theatrical expression.

My main goal of the piano project is to overcome the obvious shortcomings of the previous instrument project [choir xylophone], that found its weakness in the delay of the video response and unnatural ending of each notes’ video and sound. By achieving more seamless, choir-like real-time video composition, while retaining the flexibility as an musical instrument that will allow performer(user) freedom to perform, I want to create a musical instrument that can be played together with real performers on the stage, as a compatible musical performer.

I am building a max/jitter patch to control video and sound

And some time next week (after getting final cut installed),

I will need to have testing movies for 8 notes to start with (later, trying to cover 2 octaves including all the half steps in between)

I had a meeting with three great people(G,V,X) today to discuss the concept of MLSPA project.

A few approaches I thought I should take after today’s meeting
1. Start collecting my real photos - Contributers will be slightly different from the initial thought
2. Staging the scene - Nikki Lee, Cindy Sherman (Closest to the goal in terms of the end-result)
3. Guerrilla approach on the street - Meet the strangers, be captured
